Cargo Insurance: Things to Know
Cargo insurance is needed because cargo in transit means cargo at risk. There are many insurance options for shippers seeking to protect their cargo against loss or damage, whether by accident, natural disaster, theft, war, mishandling, or spoilage. A cargo insurance policy is in effect during the transportation of your car. It encompasses damages such as scratches, dings, dents, and gouges. It also covers neglect in loading, unloading and the transportation of the car by the driver. Any resulting damage would be addressed to the cargo policy in effect by the vehicle transport company

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the shipping process work?

Auto moving is very simple. One you submit the required paperwork and your deposit is received, BK Reliable Transport Inc. will be scheduled according to the dates on your shipping order. You will receive a confirmation call from the driver who will then schedule your pick up time. The drivers will walk around the vehicle to see if there any damage and take the delivery upon your approval and fill out the Bill of Lading. Both parties are responsible for signing off on this form and retaining a copy for personal records. Upon delivery, the same procedure will be put into effect. The driver will call 10 to 24 hours in advance to schedule approximate time of delivery. The transporter takes every precaution necessary to ensure the shipment of the car without incident: however if damage occurs, damages must be reported on the Bill of Lading upon delivery. It is imperative that you and the driver sign off on these documents.

What is a “Bill of Lading”?

A Bill of Lading is a legal document issued by the carrier, that confirms the receipt of a car for transport, and specifies the terms and conditions of delivery. The document will be used at the time of pick-up and must be signed by the client and the carrier. It is also will be signed when the car is delivered. Consider the Bill of Lading as a receipt, a contract and a document that ensures the security of your possession. Before signing the Bill of Lading, make sure you have carefully inspected both your car and the document, and that the description of your car is accurate. The possible damages must be recorded at the time of delivery. The Bill of Lading will be your proof supporting any further discussions and claims related to these damages.

Can I put personal items in the vehicle?

Auto transporters are not licensed to transport personal belongings, as they do not have a household goods transportation license issued by the Federal Government. In addition, if you were to place things in the vehicle during car shipment, they would not be covered by insurance, unless you have a floater on your own home insurance. Many auto transporting companies we use will allow some small personal belongings placed in trunk.

Where will my vehicle be picked up?

We try to pick up at your front door if possible. Often due to the difficulties of maneuvering large carriers through inaccessible residential areas or government regulated areas, vehicles will be picked up from or delivered to the closest location available. If this is the case, we suggest a close by open parking lot or a terminal. If so, then you and driver will decide a convenient mutual location.

How far in advance should I place my shipment order?

BK Reliable Transport Inc. recommends that our customers list their vehicles as far in advance as possible to provide adequate time to locate the driver for your route. The earlier you book your transport, the easier it will be for us to accommodate all of your needs, including shipment schedule. However, if an immediate pick up is necessary; we can typically arrange to have your vehicle picked up within two to three days. If the requested pick up location is in a major city, same day pick up is available in most cases at no extra cost.

What if my vehicle is delivered to a terminal?

A terminal is necessary only in the event there is not enough room for a car carrier to drop off your vehicle at its destination, because of a narrow or dead end Street, or any other conditions that would not allow a truck to enter. These terminals are fully licensed and insured. It should be noted that terminal car shipping is generally less expensive than door to door shipping as well.

What type of paperwork do I need to ship my vehicle? (Insurance, title, registration)

Unless your vehicle is leaving the country all that is required for your shipment is a signature and walk around with the driver at pick up. This walk around will allow you and the driver to verify if any damage exists at pick up.

What are the methods of payment?

Payment is made with a deposit on any major credit/debit card, or a personal PayPal account. Process can be completed on phone or through our website. The remaining balances can be paid upon pick up or delivery to the driver in CERTIFIED FUNDS (Cash, Money Order, or cashier’s check).

Do I have to be present when we pick up or deliver your vehicle?

Yes, we do require that either yourself or another designated party be present upon pick-up of your vehicle. A contract known as the “bill of loading” will need to be signed by you once the vehicle has been loaded for shipment. If you are not able to be there, please call our office prior to the pick-up date to confirm an alternate party to be responsible for your vehicle. However, if there are any changes made to the pick-up or delivery address after you have placed the order, additional costs may apply.

What should I do if my vehicle arrives with damage?

First thing you should do is make sure the driver understands that the damage is new and was not on the original Bill of Lading. The damage should clearly be marked and noted, then signed for by the driver. Upon completion of delivery, a call should be placed to driver’s insurance company or BK Reliable Transport Inc. to inform us of the damage. In most cases the car carrier will ask for an estimate and send you payment in a couple weeks. If the carrier is not responsive and unwilling to work with you to resolve the issue, make sure you contact their insurance company and make a claim. Be sure you have all the documentation to back up your claim.
